A memorial ceremony fulfills the dream of a former Barrow Rugby League player.

Former Barrow Rugby League player Freddie Goodwin, who passed away at the age of 86, was remembered fondly by his peers and the rugby community. Goodwin was known for his outstanding performances in the back division during the early 1960s, particularly with Holker Pioneers in the Barrow and District League. He joined Barrow in the 1956-57 season and made significant contributions to the team, including eight tries and 27 goals in his first season. Despite a promising career, a knee injury in the 1958-59 season led to his early retirement from professional rugby.

Former teammates and friends have shared heartfelt tributes, highlighting Goodwin’s character both on and off the field. Dave ‘Dumps’ Thompson, a former player, described him as a “true gentleman” who guided younger players with kindness and humility. John Rea, who played alongside Goodwin in the 1957 cup final, expressed his admiration for his skills and sportsmanship. Long-time friend Dennis Kidson fondly recalled their time coaching the under-19s side together, noting the lasting impact Goodwin had on the club and its players.
