 An ex-football player, 40, denies attempting suicide after being admitted to the hospital.

Former French international defender and now Lyon sporting coordinator, Daniel Congré, has denied claims that he attempted suicide. He was hospitalized after being discovered with serious stab wounds near his heart at his home in Pérols, France. Initial reports from the Montpellier prosecutor’s office labeled it a “suicide attempt,” but Congré—aged 40—has since refuted that. In an interview with L’Équipe, he said those reports are false, adding that he was conscious when emergency services arrived

Neighbours confirmed he appeared well and was socializing with his family just prior to the incident. The police have ruled out foul play and an investigation into the nature of the injury is ongoing; thankfully, officials state his life is not in danger .

Congré had a distinguished playing career with Toulouse, Montpellier (325 appearances), and Dijon before retiring and joining Lyon in November as sports coordinator. He’s currently receiving medical care, and his family and club have requested privacy during this time
