For the position of head coach, the New York Knicks will interview a top NBA assistant.

Here’s the latest update: the New York Knicks are set to interview James Borrego, currently associate head coach of the New Orleans Pelicans, for their open head coaching position — joining candidates such as Mike Brown, Taylor Jenkins, and Micah Nori in the interview process
James Borrego previously served as head coach of the Charlotte Hornets from 2018–2022, recording a 148–183 mark and guiding them to a 43–39 season in 2022–23 — their only 40‑win campaign in nine years
The Knicks obtained permission from the Pelicans to conduct the interview
Borrego is the fourth confirmed interviewee, following:
Tom Thibodeau’s departure on June 3, 2025
Taylor Jenkins (former Grizzlies coach),
Mike Brown (ex-Cavaliers, Lakers, Kings coach),
Micah Nori, Timberwolves assistant
“They fired Thibs to go get the only coach able to get them to the next level, associate coach James Borrego…”
“Plucky Pacers keep raising the bar for Knicks’ coaching search…”
Fans and analysts are skeptical — some see it as overkill after offloading Thibodeau following the Knicks’ deepest playoff run in 25 years. Others appreciate the thoroughness of the search.
What’s Next:
The Knicks continue interviewing potential hires to find someone who matches their stated goals: a coach strong in player development, rotation management, youth integration, and in-game adjustments
After these interviews conclude, they’ll make a decision. The final hire may come in late June or early July.
