Christen Press, a mainstay of the U.S. Women’s National Team and one of its most prolific forwards, has announced she will retire from professional soccer at the conclusion of the 2025 NWSL campaign.

At 36 years old, Press departs with a decorated resume: 155 international caps, 64 goals, and two FIFA Women’s World Cup titles (2015, 2019).
Over her career, she also secured multiple domestic and regional honors.

In her announcement on Good Morning America, Press spoke candidly about the mix of emotions that accompany leaving the game she has long called home.

“I feel a mix of everything. There’s relief, there’s joy, there’s excitement, there’s fear, there’s so much grief. … A part of me, a piece of me, I’m losing her.”

“It’s hard to find the words to say goodbye to a sport that has defined my life for over three decades. Football has given me everything, and I will miss being on the pitch so very much.”

Her career was not without adversity. In June 2022, Press sustained a devastating ACL injury that required multiple surgeries and sidelined her for more than two years.
Her return to action in late 2024 was widely regarded as a comeback story, though she never again rejoined the U.S. national squad.

Press’s club career spanned multiple continents. She played in the U.S. with teams such as Chicago Red Stars, Utah Royals, and Angel City FC, and also had stints in Europe including with Manchester United.
As Angel City’s first marquee signing, she became a foundational figure for the club.

Off the pitch, Press has also made her mark. She co-hosts the Re-CAP Show podcast and co-leads the media brand RE-Inc—an effort she shares with wife and former U.S. teammate Tobin Heath.
She has also been outspoken in advocating for players’ rights, equity in women’s sports, and accountability in club and league structures.

The soccer world is already paying tribute. Former teammates, rivals, and prominent figures across women’s soccer have honored Press’s influence and legacy.
US Soccer CEO JT Batson, for example, saluted her “lasting impact in our sport that goes well beyond the numbers.”

Press’s final stretches with Angel City FC continue this season, and she’ll be seeking to leave the field on her own terms, surrounded by teammates, fans, and the game she has given so much to.
