Everton Release Statement Concerning Abuse
Everton Football Club has strongly condemned the racist, misogynistic, and threatening abuse directed at Sandra Calvert-Lewin, the wife of striker Dominic Calvert-Lewin, following her supportive Instagram post after Everton’s final match at Goodison Park. The club labeled the behavior as “criminal” and emphasized its zero-tolerance policy towards discrimination and abuse. Everton is collaborating with Merseyside Police and the Premier League to identify and hold the perpetrators accountable. Merseyside Police have confirmed an active investigation and reminded the public that online anonymity does not shield individuals from legal consequences.
The incident has sparked widespread support for the Calvert-Lewin family, with several Everton fan groups expressing solidarity. Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who has scored 30 goals at Goodison Park and is among the stadium’s top three scorers, is currently in negotiations for a potential contract extension with the club.
This unfortunate event is part of a broader pattern of online abuse targeting football players and their families. Earlier this year, Everton midfielder Abdoulaye Doucouré faced racist abuse following a Merseyside derby, prompting joint condemnation from both Everton and Liverpool clubs.
Everton urges anyone who encounters such abuse to report it to the authorities, reinforcing the club’s commitment to fostering a safe and respectful environment for all associated with the sport.
