TRANSFER : Deco reveals Barcelona stance on Marcus Rashford

Barcelona sporting director Deco has confirmed that the club considered signing Marcus Rashford during the January transfer window but ultimately decided against pursuing the move. While discussions took place, Deco emphasized that Rashford was “not a priority” for the club. He stated, “It’s true, we were talking about Marcus Rashford and it was a possible signing… but he couldn’t come. We weren’t desperately looking for a signing. He was not a priority” .
Financial constraints played a significant role in the decision. Rashford’s substantial wages, reportedly over £300,000 per week, posed a challenge for Barcelona, especially under La Liga’s financial fair play regulations. Even with Manchester United’s willingness to subsidize part of his salary, the financial commitment was deemed too high .
Additionally, internal opposition within the Barcelona squad influenced the club’s stance. Key players such as Pedri, Gavi, and Ronald Araujo reportedly expressed concerns about the potential signing, citing the club’s emphasis on homegrown talent and financial prudence .
As a result, Rashford joined Aston Villa on a six-month loan deal, with the Premier League club covering a significant portion of his wages and holding a £40 million option to make the move permanent . Despite this, Rashford remains interested in a future move to Barcelona, hoping that strong performances at Villa Park might reignite the club’s interest
