Rangers in talk with former Ajax manager Francesco Farioli

Rangers FC have engaged in discussions with Francesco Farioli regarding the vacant managerial position at Ibrox. The 36-year-old Italian coach, who parted ways with Ajax in May 2025 following a dramatic Eredivisie title collapse, is currently a free agent. His resignation was attributed to differing visions between him and the club’s board .

Farioli’s coaching philosophy is heavily influenced by Pep Guardiola, Mikel Arteta, and Marcelo Bielsa, emphasizing possession-based football, high pressing, and tactical flexibility. His tenure at Ajax showcased his ability to implement a structured defensive system while maintaining an attacking mindset. Prior to his time in the Netherlands, Farioli achieved notable success with OGC Nice in France, leading them to an unbeaten start to the 2023–24 Ligue 1 season and a fifth-place finish .

Rangers’ managerial search has seen several candidates emerge. Davide Ancelotti and Russell Martin are currently considered the leading contenders. Steven Gerrard has officially withdrawn from consideration, citing personal reasons . The club is expected to finalize their managerial appointment next week, coinciding with a potential ownership takeover .

Farioli had previously been considered by Rangers before the appointment of Michael Beale and remains a long-term admirer of the club’s philosophy. His potential appointment would align with Rangers’ ambition to adopt a modern, possession-oriented playing style.
