Taylor Swift recently addressed rumors about who knew about her engagement before the public—and revealed that her close friend Ed Sheeran found out in the same way the rest of the world did—through Instagram.
During her appearance on The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Swift was prompted with the claim that Sheeran had learned of the engagement “like everyone else — on Instagram.” She confirmed it was “so true,” but offered a lighthearted explanation: Ed doesn’t have a phone.
She elaborated on the quirky logistics of their communication. She noted that when she checked her recent texts, Sheeran’s name wasn’t among her contacts. That’s because they often communicate via email, and to FaceTime him would require her to “give it to him like he’s a child,” since he’d have to find an iPad.
Swift emphasized how much she values their friendship, joking that when the engagement news broke, she realized, “Oh my God, we forgot to call Ed! Oh no!” She called him “like family” and expressed affection for the eccentricities she admires in him.
Ed Sheeran later confirmed in an interview that he indeed found out about the engagement via Instagram—and that he hadn’t received an advance heads-up or DM from Swift.
