Ranger Appoints New Manager

Russell Martin has been appointed as the new head coach of Rangers Football Club, signing a three-year contract. The 39-year-old Englishman, who previously managed Southampton, Swansea City, and MK Dons, returns to Ibrox, where he had a brief loan spell as a player in the 2017–18 season.

Martin’s appointment concludes a period of uncertainty for Rangers following the dismissal of Philippe Clement in February 2025. Interim manager Barry Ferguson was not considered for the permanent role, and other candidates, including Steven Gerrard and Davide Ancelotti, were also considered. Martin’s tactical acumen and leadership qualities impressed the club’s new American ownership group and Sporting Director Kevin Thelwell.

In his new role, Martin is expected to implement a bold and aggressive playing style aimed at challenging Celtic’s dominance in Scottish football. His coaching team will include Assistant Head Coach Matt Gill and Performance Coach Rhys Owen. The club is already preparing for the upcoming season, with Champions League qualification in the second round on the horizon.

Martin’s managerial journey began in 2019 with MK Dons, followed by stints at Swansea City and Southampton. Despite leading Southampton to Premier League promotion via the playoffs in 2023, his tenure ended in disappointment with the team enduring a poor top-flight campaign and facing early relegation.

His appointment marks a significant step for Rangers as they aim to return to the top of Scottish football under new leadership.
