Michael Wimmer has departed Motherwell

Michael Wimmer has departed his role as Motherwell manager after just 12 games in charge, opting to return to Germany to manage SSV Jahn Regensburg in the 3. Liga. His decision was primarily driven by family reasons, as he had been separated from his family who remained in Germany during his tenure in Scotland.
Wimmer, 44, joined Motherwell in February 2025, replacing Stuart Kettlewell. Under his leadership, the team secured five wins, three draws, and four losses, culminating in an eighth-place finish in the Scottish Premiership. Despite his brief stint, Wimmer had begun planning for the next season, including contract extensions for players like Stephen O’Donnell, Paul McGinn, Andy Halliday, and Callum Slattery. However, his unexpected departure has introduced uncertainty regarding the club’s future plans and potential signings, such as Austrian midfielder Lukas Fadinger.
In a statement, Wimmer expressed his gratitude to the Motherwell board, staff, and fans for their support, describing his decision to leave as “extremely hard” but necessary to prioritize his family. Motherwell has acknowledged his contributions and is now commencing the search for a new manager.
